I love ministry, all of it. And I love all my people!

Bio Sketch

I currently serve as Affiliated Community Minister at the UU Congregation of Columbia and I am the Executive Director of the South Carolina UU Justice Alliance (SCUUJA). Until recently, I also had the joy and honor of serving as Minister at the Accotink UU Church in Burke, VA. They are a fabulous, justice-loving, warm, and welcoming UU community! I also serve as Co-chair of the Commission on Social Witness of the Unitarian Universalist Association. To UU ministry, I bring extensive experience in community and organizational change to prevent both individual and structural violence and build anti-oppressive communities. I hold a PhD in Social Work and a Master of Social Work with a focus in nonprofit administration and policy from the Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. I earned a Master of Divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School, which is an anti-oppressive, justice-focused divinity school in Chicago, IL. I live in Chapin, SC with my spouse Steve and three children, along with two dogs and various fish. I enjoy time with family, running, playing piano, cooking (mostly) healthy food, reading, and admiring the outdoors.

  • Take Down the Flag Rally, Columbia, SC, Jun. 20, 2015. **I did not help organize this event. I mention this here because it was the first social justice action I brought my kids to (then 2, 4, and 7 years old). I can relate to the many challenges parents face in choosing what to bring their kids to, and this event sparked my interest in supporting multigenerational involvement (in diverse accessible ways!) in social justice action.

UU Scholarship

  • Whitaker, M.P.; A.A.L.G. McLeod; M. Garmon; J.S. Rockers; J. Christos-Rogers (2021). Undoing Systemic White Supremacy: A Call to Prophetic Action, 2021 Statement of Conscience of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

  • Whitaker, M. P. (2018). Was the American Unitarian Association Responsive to New Fellowships? Journal of Unitarian Universalist History, vol. 41. The article identifies key challenges in the fellowship movement that inform our movement today, in particular in religious exploration and intergenerational life, the communion of congregations, and responsivity to the needs of those who are marginalized.

  • Whitaker, M.P. (2018). Did the Early Christian Church Evict Women? Working paper presented to the Science, Reason, and Religion forum, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, Oakton, VA. This paper explores how women catalyzed the Jesus Movement and early Christian church, yet were later excommunicated from leadership due to patriarchy and fear on the part of male church leaders. The results are instructive to building anti-oppressive congregations today.

  • Whitaker, M. P. (2016, October). Was the American Unitarian Association Responsive to New Fellowships? Paper presented to the 2016 joint Convocation of the Unitarian Universalist History and Heritage Society and the Unitarian Universalist Collegium, Twin Cities, MN.

No one accomplishes these tasks alone. I am surrounded by a community of amazing, beautiful souls. Here is a shout out to some of my nearest and dearest!

Me, my spouse, and three kids at my ordination

Steve, me, and our kids after my ordination!

My Home Team!

I am the lucky partner to an amazing co-parent, best friend, love-of-my life Steve Lize and three truly amazing human beings we get to call our children! I'm also blessed with loving and proud UU parents. To top it off, we have two loving doggies (one is a bit grumpy) and an aging fuzz-ball cat. I am eternally grateful for the love and abundance we bring to our family team, in good times and hard times, happy days and hard ones. Couldn't and wouldn't do any of this without you!
